Programmes Advisor Mia shares her insights
Our Programmes Advisors are the driving force that ensures our funding has impact. A vital link between generous funders and the incredible community groups, charities, and voluntary organisations doing essential work on the ground, they are the eyes and ears of the Foundation, ensuring that every grant awarded makes a difference where it’s needed most.
They carefully assess every grant application and guide our funding panels, ensuring every decision is well-informed and based on insight. Beyond that, they build close relationships with community groups across Norfolk, helping them grow and thrive as they continue to make a difference.
We recently caught up with the newest member of our team, Mia, who joined us six months ago. We asked her to share her reflections on the role, the insights she’s gained, and what she’s most enjoyed about supporting the vibrant communities of Norfolk.

What’s been your favourite fund to work on so far, and why?
It’s really difficult to just pick one, but if I had to choose, I’d say the Momentum Youth Fund. It was one of the smaller funds I’ve worked on, and it was fantastic to see so many great applications from small community groups and clubs. The grants, which were up to £750, will make a huge difference for young people across the county.
What I really loved about the fund was that the grants for young people were decided by young people, with members of the Norfolk Youth Parliament making up the decision-making panel. It was a great experience to meet such engaged and inspiring young people.
What’s surprised you most about stepping into the role of a Programmes Advisor?
I’ve been most surprised by just how much incredible work is happening across the county. One of the reasons I was so drawn to this role at the Foundation was the chance to get to know Norfolk better and to understand the bigger picture. I have learnt so much about where the challenges lie and how the voluntary sector is making a real difference by supporting, connecting, and empowering communities.
Can you share a moment or project that’s made you feel proud of the work you’re doing?
My first visit was to a group called EP Youth, and this moment has really stuck with me. It was the first time I got to see a funded project in action and witness the impact they were having on young people in a rural Norfolk community first-hand.
Another experience that made me proud was our Illuminate celebration, where funders and groups came together to celebrate the amazing work happening across the sector. With so much negativity in the media due to the cost-of-living crisis and other global challenges, meeting these brilliant community groups who are actively creating positive change made me feel so energised and hopeful. I was proud to be playing a part in supporting them and the communities they serve.
What part of the job do you enjoy most — spreadsheets, stories, or something else entirely?
I love hearing about what communities plan to do with our funding and sharing what they have been able to achieve through the grants they’ve received. Being able to share these stories with our donors and funders and show them the real difference their support has made is so rewarding.
I also really enjoy getting to know the community groups and organisations that apply for funding. I’ve built so many relationships with inspiring individuals who are devoted to making a difference in their communities. And of course, I love working alongside my passionate colleagues at the Foundation!
If you could design your own dream funding programme, what would it focus on?
I would create a programme focused on getting young people outdoors and engaged in nature-based activities like conservation and developing green skills. I’ve always been passionate about the mental health benefits of connecting with nature, and I’d love to highlight the importance of protecting our green spaces.
