Giving children ‘A Better Childhood’ through fitness and adventure with Norfolk Community Foundation
For some children in Norfolk, the cost-of-living crisis is creating a barrier to key aspects of childhood such as playing sports, being active, and enjoying the outdoors. These challenges are even greater for young people with disabilities or other obstacles in their way. Many are finding it increasingly difficult to take part in activities that support their physical and mental wellbeing.
But together, we can change that.
The Norfolk Superhero Challenge has teamed up with Norfolk Community Foundation to create a fund dedicated to keeping young people active, healthy, and full of potential, both now and in the future.
The Norfolk Superhero Challenge Fund will break down financial barriers by covering club memberships, sports kits, coaching, and equipment, but it goes beyond that. It opens doors to adventure, self-discovery, and personal growth, ensuring every child has the chance to thrive.

How the Fund works:
Together with Norfolk Community Foundation, the Norfolk Superhero Challenge has created this Fund and set an ambitious goal of raising significant sums to make a real, lasting impact on the physical health and wellbeing of local children and young people facing significant challenges.
The Foundation’s A Better Childhood mission seeks to provide the building blocks to give young people a better start in life. One vital block is access to sports, outdoor activities, and active hobbies they might not otherwise experience. By contributing towards this Fund, the Norfolk Superhero is laying a foundation to help get children and young people moving through sports and adventures on their doorstep, creating stepping stones towards lifelong healthy lifestyles while also building confidence and skills.
Each year, a panel of professionals, community members and Norfolk Superheroes, meet to award funding raised at the quadrathlon event. The funding will help Norfolk-based charitable organisations across Norfolk get young people active in their community and beyond.
In 2025, the panel awarded almost £160,000 to 25 charities across Norfolk, helping to get local children active!

In 2026, the Norfolk Superhero Challenge is taking place on the 20th June. You can donate to their efforts now, directly or by sponsoring a team.

What is the Norfolk Superhero Fund all about?
Grants of up to £7,000 are available to support Norfolk-based children and young people up to 18 (or up to and including those aged 25 with SEND) who may otherwise experience barriers to sports, outdoor activities and active hobbies by:
- Pursuing ‘outdoor’ and ‘adventure’ opportunities, that broaden their horizons (including residential / away day activities).
- Participating in indoor physical activity which improves health and wellbeing.
- Pursuing their sporting ambitions and realising their full sporting potential.
- Gaining new and positive learning experiences, hobbies, and interests through physical activity.
- Ensuring activities are accessible and widening participation for young people.
The Norfolk Superhero is a charity quadrathlon event held annually in June when the tides are right, at Burnham Overy Staithe on the beautiful North Norfolk coast.
Over the years the Norfolk Superhero has grown from a small band of friends taking on a fun, annual challenge to more than 200 competitors coming together to put themselves to the test. While the challenge is undoubtedly a serious one, nobody takes themselves too seriously. Everyone has their own reasons for taking part, whether that be for fitness, fun, or friendship. What’s more, every year all the participants pledge to raise money to support Norfolk based charities, raising over £1.34million for local causes to date.
The Norfolk Superhero Challenge Fund marks the nest stage of this epic adventure, and we can’t wait to share the amazing impact this programme will have!
