Working with local partners, Norfolk Community Foundation has put together a programme of support to ensure every children and young person in Norfolk has both a digital device and internet connection to be able to access learning and opportunity through the pandemic and beyond.

A lack of computer equipment is rapidly widening the opportunity gap for some of the most disadvantaged young people in Norfolk, with an estimated over 6,000 children in Norfolk without a device to take part in remote learning. However, our charities are also aware of a large number that are falling through the gaps in government provision because of extreme circumstances.

The sudden shutdown of schools means a majority of our young people are now trying to learn remotely from home, a worrying number without the digital capacity to be able to do so. Where there is a device in the home, often there are a number of children competing for access time. On top of this, there are also over 700 16-17 year-olds who were recorded as not in education or employment or training in Norfolk last year who will miss out on government provision.

Norfolk Community Foundation has brought together partners across the county to optimise available resources, target help where it is most needed and ensure the solution is compatible and supportable in the long term. To do this we have launched two programmes of support:

  • Every Child Online: Ensuring every school age child has a digital device and internet connection to learn remotely at home, making sure no child is left behind in their learning because of digital disadvantage.
  • Plug the Gap: Helping those children and young people falling through the gaps that others can’t reach and ensuring the rapid delivery of digital devices to those that need them the most.

With your help we can provide digital devices and internet connections to children and young people in education, as well as the cared for, the young carers, the excluded, the vulnerably housed and the forgotten.
