Mancroft Advice Project

The Mancroft Advice Project (MAP) in Norwich received a grant of almost £1,000 to allow 20 young people aged 12 through to 23 to take part in six dance and drama workshops to work on issues of self confidence and self esteem.

MAP provides free, confidential advice, support and counselling to young people in the Norwich area aged 11-25. Last year, well over 7,000 young people utilised the services that MAP offers and that number continues to grow. Typically, MAP are approached to help with issues of homelessness, benefits, training and education. Many of its clients have endured child abuse, homelessness and substance dependency. MAP is committed to helping them rebuild their lives and take a holistic approach to improving their lives and maximising the opportunities available to them.

MAP worked with The Garage in Norwich to pioneer a programme of drama and dance to foster trust and self confidence and deal with issues of anger management and self esteem. The sessions were approx three hours long and explored the origins and history of Street Dance and Capoeira before attempting the skills involved. Drama was used to explore issues of trust, confidence and interaction and has resulted in this group of young people building constructive relationships and developing the confidence to move forward with their lives.

One theme that came up repeatedly from the young people was that they truly valued the chance to express themselves All who attended the workshops have requested further classes to aid their personal and physical development. MAP’s director, Victoria Smillie, was thrilled at how much the group gained.

She explained that the staff and volunteers at MAP are committed to young peoples’ development as well as addressing their direct needs. MAP provides a drop in service for young people daily from midday until 6.00pm, except Wednesdays when it’s from 1.30pm. MAP can be contacted on 01603 766944 or email info@MAP11-25.org.
