Autistic Way

Autistic Way is helping children aged two and upwards and their families from all over Norfolk. Their facilities currently help around 250 children, and with diagnosis now being made much earlier in a child’s development, that number is set to increase .

The Autistic Way Smart Kids OK Project has received a grant of just over £1,300 from Norfolk Community Foundation to pay for some much needed toys for the Parent & Toddler group. Dressing up clothes, face paints and a robust Thomas the Tank Engine train set, were all purchased with the grant. The high staffing ratio necessary for these special kids meant there was no money left to pay for toys. Thanks to Norfolk Community Foundation they now have both.

Little is really understood about autism, yet it is estimated to affect 5,000 families in Norfolk alone. Parents feel stigmatised because whilst their child looks normal, his or her behaviour frequently appears unruly to those who witness the outbursts that so often

define an autistic child. Frequently it seems easier simply to stay at home. Whole families become isolated and withdrawn.

Smart Kids OK is a Great Yarmouth based charity established to provide practical support, understanding and friendship for autistic children, their siblings and parents.

Fortunately, early diagnosis is now more common, enabling support and intervention at this critical stage in a child’s development.

Smart Kids OK added a playgroup to its range of activities, so that the kids affected and their families can benefit from an understanding, accepting play environment, where their frustrations are seen as just that.

“This grant has enabled us to buy the toys we need to really stimulate and engage our ‘Smart Kids’; the money we raise ourselves all goes to keeping us in operation. This modest grant has made a major difference.”
