Wymondham Dementia Support Group
Wymondham Dementia Support Group (formerly Wymondham Pabulum Cafe) meets every Friday, offering dementia sufferers and their carers an opportunity to socialise, access support and have a light lunch/refreshments.
Activities comprise reminiscence sessions, games and quizzes, basic internet and email use, singing, music and tea dance style events. Carers are given the opportunity to meet with others in the same position for peer support and respite from their caring role while trained volunteers look after members with dementia. 10-15 dementia sufferers attend each cafe with their carer. Most are aged 70 – 80, and have other health issues.
People with dementia and their carers frequently feel isolated and powerless, and often lack a proper diagnosis and care plan. The service offers advocacy, advice and information services and access to visiting specialists to advise on matters such finance and benefits. Members join in response to word of mouth or local publicity, and may also be encouraged by GPs and other healthcare professionals. The sessions are managed by a co-ordinator seconded from Age UK Norfolk plus 24 trained volunteers.
