West Norfolk School for Parents – Little Discoverers works with families with children with a range of disabilities including cerebral palsy, Down’s Syndrome, motor learning difficulties and delayed development, from birth to five years. This is the only group in West Norfolk offering services of this kind and families can travel some distance to access the sessions.
The overall aim is to maximise the child’s development and potential, and ease the transition into mainstream nurseries and schools at the appropriate age. The group also offers peer support and expert advice for parents and carers, and encourages them to be involved in their child’s development. Little Discoverers runs three times per week for 36 weeks of the year for small groups of six children, their parents or carers. Sessions are led by trained facilitators, although most activity is parent led and tailored to the needs of each child. Areas covered include sitting/ standing balance, hand/ eye co-ordination, emotional development, social skills and making friends, speech and signing to aid communication.
Families receive help with transport costs to attend, and home visits and assessments are carried out to determine individual needs. Little Discoverers received a grant of £2,500 from the Love Norfolk fund in 2012 to help meet increased demand.
