Norwich and Norfolk Community Arts

Norwich and Norfolk Community Arts (NORCA) delivers the Sistema project which aims to work with children aged 4-11 from deprived areas using orchestral music as a tool to build confidence, social and personal skills, and a sense of achievement.

Sistema is based on an internationally recognised model of the same name created in Venezuela with street children. The programme is currently delivered in Larkman and Catton Grove primary schools offering two after school sessions in each location per week. Children can choose between learning violin, viola, cello, double bass, brass or woodwind instruments or percussion – all instruments and tutoring are provided free of charge.

Norfolk Community Fund awarded £5,000 towards this project in 2012 to support tutor and venue costs over 12 months. 120 children are currently engaged in the project, along with eight regular parent volunteers. Through evaluation and feedback from parents, carers and teachers improvements in confidence, aspiration, attitude, attention span, teamwork, sociability and behaviour, as well as educational achievement, have been recorded.
