Harling & District Social Support Group
Harling & District Social Support Group is a volunteer led group serving the Thetford area which provides a range of services for around 30 older people who suffer from isolation caused by disability, mental ill health, bereavement or other life changing events.
Typical activities include visiting speakers, craft activities, social events and outings, plus movement to music and other gentle exercise to generally benefit health, increase mobility and reduce the risk of falls. This group is the only club in the village that meets weekly, and therefore provides important social contact for older people. The group has good links with the local GP surgery, church and other local organisations, and is supported by two specialist volunteers who are Alzheimer Society trained ex-nurses who assist members who have memory loss. These meetings offer peer support, and friendships are made which continue outside of the meetings.
In 2012 the Shadwell Community Fund awarded £850 to help support the group’s activity costs.
