Harleston Information Plus
Harleston Information Plus (HIP) runs a well established jobs club offering application advice, interview skills and other job seeking support. The jobs club helps c. 100 jobseekers each year, with c. 50% of members supported into employment, training or volunteering.
In 2012 HIP were awarded £5,000 from the Norfolk Youth Innovation Fund to develop a similar weekly club specifically designed to meet the needs of 16-24 year olds in Harleston and the surrounding areas. The young people’s jobs club meets every Thursday 12-2pm, using volunteers and qualified staff to offer ongoing support, plus expert input from Job Centre Plus, careers guidance services, apprenticeship providers, local colleges and employers.
The Job Centre is not able to offer tailored programmes for this age group – particularly since many young unemployed people do not register for job seekers allowance or other benefits. The club attracts users from Diss, Harleston and the surrounding villages, and links have been made with local youth groups, Princes Trust and Diss Job Centre, which makes referrals. In its first 6 months the club saw 33 young members, with nine securing employment, one securing a work placement and another entering training.
